Wow this is super interesting! I’d never heard of oshikatsu before, but it’s defo got me thinking...
In my head they are the most loyal customers & super fans, and I’d love to know more about this as a whole, to get a larger scale picture. The implications this can have on business for example are quite vast!
Thanks for the comment, Daniel. I would consider 'oshikatsu' as an example of the pareto principle from the consumer perspective, with the minority of consumers generating the vast majority of revenue for a given entertainment property. 'Oshikatsu' has origins in Japanese pop idol culture where fans purchase merchandise related to a specific idol group member solely for the purpose of "pushing" (the literal meaning of 'oshi') them to become the group's anchor.
This may not be new to some, but is definitely a welcome revelation to me, and after doing some digging of my own & having a discussion with my partner, I think I understand it a little bit more now.
Super interesting stuff, and I'll now be digging into the 'pareto principle' too haha!
